Rolfing®

Rolfing® is a form of soft tissue manipulation that organizes the body in gravity. Rolfing gets its name from its founder, biochemist Dr. Ida P. Rolf, who discovered that by working with the body's fascia, or connective tissue, she could achieve dramatic changes in the body’s posture and structure.

People seek Rolfing as a way to ease pain and chronic stress, and improve performance in their professional and daily activities. Rolfing can resolve pain and stress from many different causes, including back pain, repetitive motion injury, trauma and aging. Research has demonstrated that Rolfing creates a more efficient use of the muscles and more economical and refined patterns of movement. Rolfing has also been shown to lead to better neurological functioning and conservation of energy. Clients often experience this as a newfound surplus of energy.

Rolfing uses a range of soft tissue techniques to access deep myofascial structures, mobilize joints and release motion restrictions. The work is slow, intentional, and gives the client a feeling for where the body is in space. Though the pressure used in Rolfing is deep, Rolfers have developed a broad range of techniques that produce profound results with less discomfort.

Rolfing is optimally performed in a series of ten sessions. Each session in the “10-Series” builds on the ones previous, unraveling areas of holding.  This means not just working “where it hurts” but also identifying other areas of the body that contribute to misalignment. Since no two bodies are alike, the 10-Series is different for each person. However, it always embodies the core principles for releasing the body’s structure as taught by Dr. Rolf and practiced only by Rolfers.

As posture and alignment shift during the 10-Series, the Rolfer helps clients become aware of their inhibiting movement patterns and teaches them how to change them. This allows the client to maintain the progress made in the 10-Series and carry the benefits forward in a lasting way.
