Yoshi Kono, CMT, blends his extensive knowledge of art and science with keen intuitiveness and craftsmanship, working to create a bodywork approach that empowers his clients to explore their optimum state of mind-body awareness and healing. A native of Chiba, Japan, Yoshi studied molecular biology at the prestigious University of Tokyo before coming to the United States at age 21, to study classical piano at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. He went on to complete a 600+ Hours Core Plus Program at the Potomac Massage Training Institute (PMTI) in Washington, DC in 2006, where he served as a teaching intern after graduation.
As an artist, Yoshi sees each bodywork session as a creative endeavor, a living art form that must be both aesthetically pleasing and pragmatic in nature. Yoshi believes that everyone can experience release and healing, and restore balance by intimately reconnecting with the physical self through yoga, special diet, exercise and/or meditation by integrating the right kind of mind-body awareness into the practice. Realizing those goals through skilled bodywork can be life-changing as well. Yoshi also believes that it is of great value for him to take the role of gentle leader in empowering his clients to become self-motivated and participate in their exploration of well-being and self-awareness.
Before his love of nature, backpacking and great food drew him to San Francisco in February 2011, Yoshi maintained a very successful practice delivering both therapeutic maintenance and finely detailed deep work to address specific conditions, including chronic pain, joint replacement complications, cancer and fibromyalgia, notably at the Teal Center at Virginia Hospital Center, in Arlington, VA. Clients were often referred by Pain Management doctors, Orthopedist and the Physical Therapy department. He also worked at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in Washington, DC, where office-environment related woes such as chronic tensions, sciatica, repetitive stress injuries and stress relief were addressed. Yoshi enjoys deepening his understanding of bodywork through observing the principles and the universality among modalities such as NeuroMuscular Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Oncology Massage, Myofascial Release, Thai Yoga Massage, Feldenkrais Method, yoga and weight training alike, utilizing them to create a unique style of highly focused bodywork with deep pressure. To enhance clients' experience and to apply this expertise, he handcrafts massage oils and butters from raw organic botanical ingredients, including essential oils, to address each client's unique needs.
